ISET Research Scholars The ISET Research Scholars Program is a
mentor-based program. Its objective is to educate and train students for
technical leadership. Graduates should be able to contribute to and exploit
our current understanding of science and engineering. They should also be
proficient in communicating in an effective manner their ideas and the
rationale behind them. To develop these capabilities a student and a mentor
who share this common objective are paired. This paradigm has been followed
successfully by nationally recognized student programs undertaken by Lucent
Bell Laboratories [1] and AT&T Labs [2] for nearly
30 years. In addition to a mentor each ISET
research scholar is provided with financial-need qualified scholarship
support of $3,125.00 dollars per year. Scholars will be drawn from talented students pursuing
baccalaureate or graduate degrees in information sciences and engineering
related fields. Applicants may be at any level of academic study. The program
affords students the opportunity to undertake research projects with a
faculty mentor. Personal interaction and mentoring by a practicing
professional are key ingredients in the program. To this end, scholars will
be engaged and integrated into research activities at research laboratories
and centers such as the Center for Advanced Computation and
Telecommunications (CACT), Algorithms Laboratory, and other IT Labs at UMASS Lowell. [1]
